Since the dawn of time, the Winter solstice has been the occasion for festivities intended to give people renewed courage and hope when they were frightened by the cold ground, the absence of life and the darkness. In the Middle Age, the plays and public performances were much appreciated in Europe. Their content and symbolism often drew on pagan traditions and rites. Later, they were centred on the topic of the birth of the Saviour. It is at this time that the living cribs appeared.
